Member Care & Counseling

Walking alongside one another in truth and love

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)

Process of Care within The Family

City Groups

Our City Groups are the primary place of receiving and extending care, and we desire for this to be the first place you go to in times of need. Both the Bible and personal experience show us that the most effective and consistent place of change and healing happens within a community of close friends doing life alongside you. If you’re currently struggling with a problem, please reach out to some City Group peers, be honest about your circumstances, and ask for help.

Examples of Situations:
Relational difficulty with a friend or family member
General anxiety, depression or loneliness
Frustrations with parenting/children
Controlling sinful temptations
Seeking wisdom for your career
General discouragement in life
Wisdom in dating and/or break-ups
Frustrations with an employee/boss
Grief/bereavement

City Group Leaders

Secondly, City Group Leaders are your next line of help. They are gifted and committed leaders who exist to serve and shepherd you. We generally recommend that you make a City Group Leader aware of any problem or issue you’re dealing with, even if a CG peer is the best person to walk alongside you and help keep you accountable during this time. It’s their privilege and joy to help care for you, and they’ve been trained in a variety of ways to uniquely encourage and counsel you through whatever circumstances you’re experiencing.

Examples of Situations:
Seeking dating/relationship advice
Difficulties or conflict within marriage
Problems controlling anger
Sins of addiction (alcohol, drugs, pornography, food disorders, etc)

Pastoral Care

If after reaching out to City Group peers and a City Group Leader you have all collectively discerned that greater pastoral assistance is needed, we are happy to provide pastoral help. The best way to connect with a pastor or staff member and ensure you are being matched with the most appropriate person is by filling out this form. We’ll follow up as quickly as possible to help you take the best next steps in receiving care.

Examples of Sitations:
Pre-engagement or premarital counseling
Understanding theological differences or disputes
Requests for healing prayer
Walking through significant moral failures (e.g. arrest, affair, etc.)
Receiving troubling medical diagnoses
Any chronic or extreme situation in which additional support is needed
Weddings, funerals, and/or deaths
Emergency situations

Please note, if you are experiencing an emergency situation (e.g. threat to life, suicidal thoughts, sexual abuse, physical/domestic abuse, illegal drug activity, etc.) call 911 or the proper authorities before notifying any Summit Church leader.

Professional Counseling Referrals

While we believe that the local church should be the primary context for counseling, there are times when we recommend individuals to seek professional help. This is typically on a case-by-case basis and still done with the help of your entire community via the recommended steps above (i.e. starting with City Group peers, then City Group Leaders, then Pastoral Care). Circumstances such as physical/ sexual abuse, severe depression, mental disorders, eating disorders, and addictions are examples of situations in which we may seek additional help.

If you feel like you need professional services, our church has a wonderful partnership with Denver Counseling and Coaching. Please fill out this form to contact one of our staff or pastors and we can discuss next steps of care.
